How To Write A Press Release
How to Write a Press Release
Press Releases are a great way to create
excitement about Alpha Phi Omega. Newspapers, Television and
Radio are always looking for content that will attract and inform
their audience. When you want to share good news, invite
people to participate in a service project or event or celebrate
milestones such as activating a pledge class or holding an
anniversary dinner, plan for media coverage. Here's how
Identify specific media outlets and get names
and addresses of the appropriate editor, producer or staff member
at each outlet. Find out if they prefer print or electronic
receipt of press releases (or send both).
Create one or more press releases, focusing on
the newsworthy or key message you want to relate to the
audience.
Send your press release, but follow up by
phone in a timely manner to ensure that the outlet has received it
and to check if they have questions.
Plan to meet and orient any members of the
press who will be attending the event. It is extremely
helpful for the reporter and APO member in charge of press coverage
to exchange cell phone numbers.
Like a good news article, a press release has
to include the 5 W's: who, what, where, when and why. Keep it
simple, direct and avoid jargon(spell out Alpha Phi Omega Service
Fraternity acronyms). Include a basic overview of the organization
at the end.
